AI has become a routine part of daily life, with more people using it in ways that are raising concerns about both individual and public health impacts. One example is AI-generated pornography, which can become compulsive and problematic. Although porn addiction is not formally recognized as a diagnosable condition, a growing body of research suggests it is an emerging issue with potentially serious consequences.

Key takeaways:
  • AI pornography includes a variety of explicit texts, images, audio, and video that can be generated in response to user input, specifications, and preferences.
  • More people are using AI pornography because it provides a more personalized and interactive experience, where chatbots can simulate emotional connections, and content can be generated on demand.
  • Pornography addiction (including AI porn addiction) is not currently a diagnosable condition, despite the fact that many people describe compulsive and problematic patterns of use.
AI Pornography Addiction

Understanding AI pornography

AI porn describes a variety of different types of AI-generated explicit content, including chatbots and generative AI used to create pornographic audio, images, and videos. Unlike traditional pornography, AI porn offers a highly customizable experience for users who can specify preferences for physical features, scenarios, and sexual acts. Over time, AI platforms can log preferences to provide a more personalized experience for users.

AI can also simulate an interactive sexual experience through the use of chatbots that simulate an actual relationship. This has led to people forming false connections with an “AI girlfriend” or chatbot that is able to simulate an emotional connection, in addition to sexually stimulating content. The highly customizable, personalized, and relational nature of some AI pornography could make it more addictive than traditional porn.

AI technology has also been used to create deepfake pornography, which uses existing images or videos of a person to create realistic pornographic images and videos. This technology has many potential misuses, with serious ethical implications. For example, deepfake technology can be used to create fake nude pictures or amateur sex tapes, which may be shared, distributed, or uploaded to the internet. As this technology advances, it can be increasingly difficult to determine whether a pornographic image or video is real or AI-generated.

In recent years, AI platforms have advanced and become more commonly used for a number of different tasks and activities. As AI use has become more common, users have gained more experience directly interacting with AI platforms, search engines, and chatbots. This partly explains the growing popularity of AI porn, but other reasons it has become increasingly popular include:

  • Ease of access, convenience, and speed of AI in generating preferred content.
  • Limited regulation or restrictions on the type of content generated.
  • Offers a more personalized and customizable user experience.
  • Can simulate relational intimacy for a more interactive and immersive experience.
  • Provides unlimited novelty and options to create new content.
  • May be seen as easier and less risky than real-life encounters.

Is it addictive?

Currently, there is no consensus on whether AI porn is addictive, despite the fact that a number of people describe compulsive and problematic use. Because this technology is relatively new, more research is needed to explore how it is being used and what effects it is having. Some researchers believe that AI porn could be more addictive than traditional porn because of how easy it is to customize and personalize content to curate a preferred experience.

Types of AI porn

There are a number of different types of AI porn that are available, including chatbots and generative AI that can create audio, videos, or images according to user inputs. Rather than distinct types, most AI pornography sites provide a mix of features and options to choose from. Over time, they will track user inputs to provide a more personalized experience that mirrors the preferences of the user.

AI chatbots

Most people are familiar with AI chatbots, which allow users to enter text instructions or prompts to get information or instruct the system to do a certain task. Unlike search engines, AI chatbots can simulate a dialogue to provide clearer and more personalized responses to user inputs.

In the context of AI porn, chatbots are computer programs that can simulate romantic or sexual conversations with users. For example, an AI chatbot may be instructed to role-play a specific sexual scenario or engage in ‘sexting’ that is designed to feel realistic.

Usually, AI chatbots can be customized to have specific attributes, traits, or ‘personalities’ to create a synthetic relationship over time. Many AI chatbots are able to generate images, videos, audio, or other media to make the experience more interactive.

AI-generated images & media

Generative AI is a type of AI program that is capable of creating new content, rather than simply summarizing or providing access to existing content. For example, generative AI is sometimes used to create AI art in the form of images or videos.

In the context of AI porn, generative AI is used to create pornographic media according to the text input and instructions provided by the user. For example, an AI chatbot may be asked to create a pornographic image of a teacher wearing a specific type of outfit or engaging in a sexual act.

Generative AI porn has come under recent scrutiny because there have been reports of some users generating images or videos of sexual assault or abuse. For example, there have been reports that some users generate child pornography using this technology. Many AI platforms restrict this use, and there continue to be more and more jurisdictions that are outlawing its use.

Deepfake porn

Deepfake porn is another type of AI porn that is becoming more common and involves using AI to generate realistic images or videos of real people. As this technology has advanced, it has become more difficult to determine deepfakes from real images and videos.

In the context of AI porn, deepfakes may be created using existing images found online or that the user provides. Deepfake porn involving celebrities has become very common, but some users have also used this technology against people they know in real life.

This has sparked a lot of public controversy and debate about whether there should be laws against this, especially since this content could have very negative effects on a person. For example, deepfakes could ruin a person’s reputation, cause conflict in their relationship, or place their career in jeopardy.

Compulsive sexual behavior and AI porn

Compulsive sexual behavior disorder has been identified and classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an impulse control disorder. According to WHO, the signs and symptoms of compulsive sexual behavior disorder are:

  • Persistent difficulty controlling sexual thoughts, urges, and behaviors.
  • Distress or impairment caused by uncontrolled sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors.
  • Inability to stop or control sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors.
  • Excessive time and energy devoted to sexual thoughts or behaviors.
  • Continued behavior even when it causes problems at work, home, or in relationships.

Is porn addiction diagnosable?

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has a major say on which mental health and addictive disorders are formally recognized and diagnosable. Formal recognition of a disorder happens when the APA includes a condition in the DSM 5, which is a reference book used to diagnose all mental illnesses, including addictions.

Currently, the APA has not formally recognized porn addiction, AI porn addiction, or sex addiction. While these conditions may not be diagnosable under these names, they are included under a condition called Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), which opens the door to potential treatments.

Despite this, there is a growing recognition within the field of mental health that these behavioral addictions are real. Clinicians and addiction treatment centers may still provide services to individuals with porn or sex addictions, although insurance companies may not cover the cost of these treatments.

Signs of problem use & negative effects of AI porn use

Even though porn addiction is not formally recognized as a diagnosis, many people describe patterns of problem use. Many of the signs of problem use involve noticing impacts on daily routines, priorities, and important relationships. Some people who develop a problem with pornography also describe changes in the way they use porn, including more frequent use and viewing more graphic content over time.

Here are some of the signs that can indicate problem use of pornography:

  • Using porn more often than intended, or during inappropriate times.
  • Strong uncontrollable urges to view pornography.
  • Using pornography as a way of coping with stress or difficult emotions.
  • Needing more graphic or disturbing content over time in order to stay aroused.
  • Secrecy and dishonesty in important relationships to hide porn use.
  • Inability to become aroused, stay aroused, or orgasm in real-life encounters.
  • Feeling less attracted or interested in real-life partners and sex.
  • Problems and conflicts in important relationships are caused by porn.
  • Viewing pornographic content that is abusive or non-consensual.
  • Failure to meet responsibilities at work or home because of porn use.
  • Prioritizing porn use over other leisure or recreational activities.
  • Feeling excessive shame or guilt about pornography use.
  • Negative effects on mental health.

There are several ways that excessive and problematic use of porn can affect someone. Many people who struggle with porn addiction report negative effects in their relationships, including increased conflict, reduced trust, and intimacy. It is also common for people to report that over time, they experience sexual dysfunction that prevents them from being able to have or enjoy sex with their partner.

Professional treatment for porn addiction

Because pornography addiction is not formally recognized as a diagnosis, insurance may not provide coverage for treatment options. People who are able and willing to self-pay for treatment can often find a number of different options, including residential and outpatient rehab.

Because there are so many individuals who struggle with pornography use, a number of addiction professionals and treatment centers have begun to offer treatments tailored to this issue. Therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are commonly used to treat pornography addictions.
