More About Matthew

Matthew Rippeyoung is a clinical psychologist and founder of Rippeyoung & Associates, a group psychotherapy practice in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. For more than two decades, he has worked with individuals, couples, and families facing addiction, trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and other complex mental health concerns.

While addiction is one of Matthew's primary areas of practice, his approach extends beyond substance use itself. He believes that meaningful recovery often involves understanding the psychological, relational, and emotional factors that make addictive behaviors difficult to leave behind. He takes a compassionate and collaborative approach that helps people build lives that no longer require substances as a primary coping strategy.

Matthew also has extensive experience working with couples and families affected by addiction. He recognizes that substance use rarely impacts only one person and that healthy relationships can become an important part of long-term recovery. His clinical work emphasizes communication, emotional regulation, attachment, and the development of practical skills that support lasting change.

In addition to his clinical practice, Matthew is committed to bringing psychological concepts to the public. Through videos, interviews, podcasts, and written articles, he works to make psychology understandable without sacrificing scientific accuracy. His goal is to challenge common misconceptions about mental health while providing practical guidance that readers can apply to their own lives.

As a specialist advisor to Recovered, Matthew shares his knowledge and experience about addiction, recovery, relationships, trauma, and mental health.
