Prices for psilocybin magic mushrooms (shrooms) vary wildly depending on the weight and potency purchased, with prices ranging between $5 and $3,000.

Measurement (weight)Price in USD
One gram of shrooms (1g)$5 - $12
One-eighth of shrooms (3.5g)$32 - $35
Half an ounce of shrooms (14g)$100 - $120
One ounce of shrooms (28g)$200 - $230
One pound of shrooms (454g)$2,500
Key takeaways:
  • As shrooms have a low density for their size, weights sold tend to be less than a kilo and can often be bought in gram, eighth, pound, and ounce weights.
  • An eighth, also known as an eight ball, is 3.5 grams or 1/8th of an ounce and is the most common weight shrooms are sold in. The average cost for an eighth of shrooms is $32.
  • One of the most prevalent influences of drug price is often legal implication for distribution and manufacturing, with substances such as fentanyl carrying a 10-year min sentence for possession of 400g or more.

How much do psilocybin mushrooms cost?

The price of shrooms (psilocybin mushrooms) varies massively, ranging from as little as $5 all the way up to $3000. The average cost for mushrooms in the United States mainly depends on the quantity purchased, how prevalent magic mushrooms are in the area they are bought, and the genus (type)

Typically though, the overall quantity or weight of shrooms bought has the biggest impact on cost. As shrooms have a low density for their size, weights sold tend to be less than a kilo and can often be bought in gram, eighth, pound, and ounce weights.

The cost of a gram of shrooms

Psilocybin mushrooms by the gram typically cost between $5 and $12. This makes them considerably cheaper than other drugs such as cocaine, which has a street value of around $120 per gram.

The cost of an eighth of shrooms

An eighth, also known as an eight ball, is 3.5 grams or 1/8th of an ounce, and is the most common weight shrooms are sold in. The average cost for an eighth of shrooms is $32.

The cost of an ounce of shrooms cost

One ounce of magic mushrooms (28g) costs $200 - $230 on average in the US. Some drug dealers will also sell shrooms at half or quarter-ounce weights, averaging $100 or $60 respectively.

The cost of a pound of shrooms

Shrooms are rarely sold in pound weights due to the vast quantity and high price. A pound of magic mushrooms (454g) costs around $2,500.

The cost of mushroom edibles

An ever-expanding range of psilocybin and shroom edibles have made their way onto the market. These include psilocybin chocolate, teas, gummies, and more. As the market continues to grow, the price of these items changes with them. At the time of writing, some shroom chocolate bars cost as little as $5.

What affects the price of magic mushrooms?

As with buying any form of illicit substance, the price paid at street level can vary considerably based on numerous factors.

One of the most prevalent influences of drug price is often legal implication for distribution and manufacturing, with substances such as fentanyl carrying a 10-year min sentence for possession of 400g or more. This factor is slightly mitigated with psilocybin as the general consensus and state laws are moving steadily towards decriminalization, with Oregon and Colorado having already made possession of the drug legal

Other factors that can influence the price of shrooms include:

The quantity of shrooms purchased

A pound of shrooms costs considerably more than an ounce.

The genus or type of shroom purchased

Some variants are only found in certain climates and can cost more due to importing risks.

Location

Areas that don’t have a high demand for psilocybin mushrooms may charge more.

Purity/strength of shrooms

Some mushrooms are bioengineered to have a stronger potency, which means they stay in your system for longer and can be more expensive.

Source

Dealers on the street may charge more due to the inherent risks than someone selling the drug online.

Psilocybin risk mitigation

While the risk of addiction to hallucinogens such as psilocybin is relatively low, there are other health concerns to consider before taking magic mushrooms. This is especially true if it is the first time taking the drug or if you have a history of mental health disorders

  • Risks of taking shrooms can include:
  • Panic attacks
  • Poisoning (if shrooms have been tampered with)
  • Psychosis (rare but holds an additional risk in those with mental health disorders such as Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder)
  • Extreme discomfort (often from auditory and visual hallucinations)
  • Nausea

While taking shrooms is illegal in most states, this does not stop people from trying them. In order to prevent negative side effects and reduce the need for medical attention, those taking magic mushrooms should remember the following:

Set: ‘Set’ refers to a person's mental and emotional state before they take psychedelic or hallucinogenic drugs. If you are experiencing a period of negative mental health or emotional distress, it is strongly advised not to take shrooms.

Setting: Setting refers to the place in which you take drugs and the people you are with. The effects of shrooms may be amplified in busy or chaotic settings (such as festivals or clubs) and taking them with strangers may lead to a negative experience.

Source: Knowing your shrooms are from a reliable source and have not been tampered with (such as being mixed with other drugs) can reduce the risk of hazardous side effects and/or psilocybin overdose.

Safety: Shrooms can cause intense visual and auditory hallucinations as well as feelings of euphoria and detachment. Taking them to locations that are unsafe or in dangerous situations can lead to unforeseen negative outcomes.

Spotter: Having a person with you who you trust (especially one who has taken shrooms before) as a spotter can ensure that no harm befalls you while under the influence of the substance.

The cost of psilocybin therapy

Psilocybin therapy as a viable treatment for mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety is still in its infancy, but growing traction due to its proven benefits in research trials.

Therefore it is difficult to put a price on how much psilocybin therapy costs as practitioners are often doing so outside of legal boundaries. As research into the efficacy of psilocybin continues, alongside the growing decriminalization of shrooms, psilocybin therapy is sure to grow in popularity and availability.
